Air is damp
this night as a cold rain falls,
I should
turn the furnace on to warm the house
but and
there’s always a but this time of year
I want to
breathe fresh air, with windows open.
Toss
another blankie on the bed I say to meself
to ward off
the chill, even though socks are warming
under a
pile of quilts already laid upon the bed,
note to
self, seek out the Egyptian cotton linens.
I putter
about seeking the fleece pajamas
needing to
but not wanting too because it’s too early
this
October, much too early to be bundling up
against the chill of summer sheets in a cold bed.
